How to Convert XML to CSV Manually or Automatically

To convert a XML file to Excel format, run FileSculptor. The first screen shown is the Import screen, where you can select the file to import. Click on Open File button, change the file type filter to XML Files and select a XML file on your computer.

A XML file contain data structured in a tree. Click on Edit Properties button to show the XML tree and select a tree node to view data related to the node, its children nodes and parent nodes. The first 100 lines of data for the node are shown on the preview grid.

You can define the type of fields to number and date, and specify the format of the data stored on the XML. You can also give fields a label to be used on the column header when exporting data.

Click on Export tab to show the configure the file to export. Click on Browse button, select CSV format, folder location and file name. You can use an existing file or create a new file by typing its name.

Click on Edit Properties button to configure the destination file. If the export file already exists and you want to add data from the XML to it, click on option “Append content to the end”. Select the location of the sheet, by name and position and first line and column to write data to.

Select fields from the source, you can also reorder fields. If you simply want a copy of data in the source file, click on “Add All” button to add all fields from source to destination. You can also specify the type of each field and the format to display data on the spreadsheet.

A preview grid shows how data will be written on destination.

Click on Run tab to do the conversion. Click on Run Now button and FileSculptor will process the source file and write data to the destination file, creating a new file if it does not exist.

Save the project to repeat the same file conversion again when needed. You can also use the Automation tabs to create an icon shortcut on the desktop to do the conversion with one click or copy parameters to create a scheduled task or run from command prompt.
